On the heels of its 10th Anniversary, X-Dance, the world's premier action sports film festival held concurrently with the Sundance Film Festival, will honor the Godfather of action sports filmmaking himself, Warren Miller. Over the years, the X-Dance founders have given action sports films a respected platform to elevate the filmmaking in this genre to new heights.
"Warren Miller is one of the biggest inspirations in my life,".says Brian Wimmer, X-Dance Festival Director/Founder. "Warren's films, back in the day, were an exciting sign of the pending winter season to come. We want to find the Warren Millers of tomorrow and inspire today's filmmakers to push the limits and creatively express the passions of their sport and culture the way Warren did. We are thrilled to honor Warren Miller with the Lifetime Achievement Award and have him attend the festival."
After being discharged from the Navy in 1946, Warren was given an 8mm camera by two young Bell and Howell executives who were in his ski school class. He spent two winters living in the Sun Valley parking lot in his famous tear-drop trailer. Miller and friends would film each other skiing in the winter, and then surfing in spring and summer. When he would show the films to friends, he'd make jokes about what was on the screen. His work blossomed due to his yearly ski tours.
"After 500 films, shown in hundreds of cities each year, I became more convinced that the most important people in the world were those who have stood in lines at the box office and shared the wonderful rush of skiing's freedom with me," said Miller.
Miller will receive his award Jan. 26, 2010, at the Festival's closing ceremony. He also will serve as an honorary judge at the 2010 festival, along with participating in the X-Dance Institute forum, which serves as a means to educate and inspire the attending sports action filmmakers.
The X-Dance festival headquarters and screening room will be located at the Off-Broadway Theater (272 South Main Street) in Salt Lake City, Jan. 21-26. X-Dance will screen 35 of the best films in adventure and action sports, spotlighting snowboarding, skiing, surfing, mountain biking, motocross, skateboarding, rock-climbing, base-jumping, and kayaking with films from industry stalwarts like Poor Specimen, Matchstick, VAS, Teton Gravity Research, Poor Boyz, Transworld, as well as noteworthy work by emerging talent and world premieres.
The screenings are open to the public. Tickets are $8, and $5 for students. A festival pass may be purchased for $40 for all screenings. The public is invited to attend the X-Dance Award Ceremony and Closing Party which will be held in Salt Lake City, Jan. 26, location to be determined.
